Classification of computers
There are three types of computers.
- Analog computers
- Digital computers
- Hybrid computers
1. Analog computers
Analog computers work on continuous electric signal input and the output is displayed continuously. Accuracy of result obtained is 99%. They are used in industrial process controls and measure physical quantities such as pressure, temperature, etc.
Advantage: Operating system running in analog computer is faster than digital computer
Disadvantages: Low memory capacity. Perform only certain type of calculations.
2. Digital computers
Digital computers operate by counting digits in the binary form. The process data in discrete form. They are used for data processing and problem solving using programs.
Advantage: Large memory to store huge quantity of data.
Classification of digital computers
Digital computers are classified based on their speed of operation, memory capacity, hardware facilities and price. There are three types of digital computers.
3. Hybrid computers
Hybrid computers are the combination of digital and analog computers. They use the best features of both analog and digital computers. So they are able to process both continuous and discrete data. Hybrid computers are used for weather forecasting and industrial process control.
